Fair & Open Day
This year we were honoured to have Wurundjeri elder Uncle Dave Wandin return to MRSS and conduct a Welcome to Country that included a moving Smoking Ceremony. Class four respectfully and ceremoniously used their handcrafted clap sticks to help Uncle Dave lead the crowds from the Maypole up to the Class 1, 2, 3 playground area. The children brought a reverent connection between the school and the Wurundjeri.
Uncle Dave beautifully articulated his connection to country and how he uses the clean, cool white smoke as medicine to cleanse his physical and spiritual self and that of the people and land around him. For each person attending the ceremony he gave a eucalyptus leaf as a ‘passport’ for traveling through Wurundjeri country and an invitation to have their physical and spiritual selves cleansed by the smoke. We were privileged to have Uncle Dave generously share his time and wisdom.
